FLATOUT 3

GAMEPLAY VIDEO

Year: 2011
Timeframe: 6 months, full time
Position: Leveldesigner
System: PC, with a proprietary engine
Responsibilities:
Concepting, designing and developing levels, level geometry and textures from scratch, placing assets given by the art team, playtesting levels, all while being guided by the lead designer at the company.
Skills/Software used: 3Ds Max for level geometry,  modelling and texturing. Photoshop for creating textures.
Created content: 3 racing levels. Detroit suburbs, Detroit industrial and Vienna. Also 1 derby arena level, which unfortunately did not make it into the final game.

Notable accomplishments
  • Developed 4 levels for the game from concept to release in a 5 month period
  • Researched the locations I made levels for
  • Created the geometry and textures from scratch
  • Worked with assets given to me by the artists in the company and outsourced artists
  • UV'd and textured the levels on my own
  • Tested the levels myself and with others in the company
Learning points
  • Learned a lot about bigger and long-term projects that involve large amounts of money
  • The vehicle controls were heavily iterated on at the same the time the levels were developed, making it difficult to accurately create and test fun levels. It would have been better to set the controls in stone first, while concepting the levels, and then develop the levels as the controls were set
  • Showing the sequel to fans of the original titles is the best way to gauge quality, iterate and then improve on it
